The “Ape” injected Fuel Altered goes wheels up, much to the delight of the crowd and photographers.
There really were no drag races per se, it was more of a test and tune session with most of the contestants getting three hits each (if that many). The crowd got to see a lot of “old school” drag cars including fuel altereds, blown sedans, straight-axle gassers and period Factory Experimental cars.
John Richmond boils the hides on his ’65 Comet. The “Whistler” ran a best of 6.55/104 on the Irwindale 1/8th mile track. The DRO staff loves the look of this straight-axle stormer.
There were so many participants that wanted to make laps at the track that the management stopped selling tech cards because they had reached the max number of cars they could accommodate. The drag race time trials came to stop once for rain and once again for a crash of a street rod that the driver lost control of and hit the guardwall. The track then ran time trials until about 1:30 p.m. and, as they say, “th-th-th-that’s all folks.”
