Is the ABRA going to offer bracket racers something the IHRA or NHRA cannot? Will the ABRA put on an event and offer better accident insurance for the participants and crewmembers? Will the safety rules of the ABRA be certified by the existing insurance companies? Will the ABRA assume some liability for attracting you to the events if there is an accident? These are “Real World” questions you need to ask yourself and the ABRA should have considered.
If they can’t answer these questions then why would we need the ABRA? If they have the answers and it looks like it can benefit bracket racing and help it grow I’ll be the first to join. I am all for growing the sport. If it is just an idea to raise money for the Association and to lure sponsors to support the Association and its own operation, then I won’t join. If they use the association to grow the sport and get sponsors to pay contingency without outrageous fees attached, I am all for it.
I don’t think we need another “association” just to have another association. We need an association that will provide better promotion and awareness of our sport. I think we have a sport that if more people knew the small details of what is going on they would be more interested. I mean if people will watch the NBA and call that basketball I have to believe there are thousands who would come out to watch some local racers or maybe a regional bracket race.
I do wish the ABRA and Chris Barker the best in their venture. I just hope they are doing it for the right reasons. As a weekly bracket racer and former track owner I know the IHRA and NHRA have a lot of room for improvement. Thanks to Summit they are gaining credibility with me. It could be that the ABRA is the answer; time will tell. I wish them well and for those that choose to support their events I hope it is all you want it to be.
The next Hot Topic to me is the way Footbrake is growing as a stand-alone bracket class. I was never very interested in the Pro class where you can run every electronic in the world but NOT A DELAY BOX! I just never understood that one. I like the Footbrake Bracket. No two steps, no trans brakes, no throttle controllers. I think it will continue to grow as it is a simpler way to race and features car and driver vs. car and driver. Nobody can credit or blame the electronics in Footbrake. Now, if I just had room and money to build myself another ’63 Plymouth wagon like I used to race. Two pedals, a shifter and steering wheel. I think I am missing the “simpler life” of the “good old days”.
I hope I have got you thinking about a few things. I realize there are a lot of Hot Topics and everyone has their own opinion of what their own Hot Topic is. If you have one that you think I should look into or feel strongly about, send a LETTER TO THE EDITOR. Now is the time to speak up or shut up. The choice is yours. ![]()
