You would really have to try hard not to know about Jack Beckman and his little incident in Lee Jennings “American Revolution” Camaro at Sacramento Raceway's Funny Car Fever. A picture of his bumpy ride even graced the cover of this fine web-rag. It goes without saying, we are all very happy that Jack walked away with nary a scratch. That is a testament to the safety equipment, the track safety crew and the (don’t throw anything at me!) SFI chassis specs. For all appearances the car looks totaled. We hope that is not the case and Lee, Lee Paul and Lisa can rebuild soon.

What, if any, repercussions will this have for any currently employed Big Show drivers who want to come “play” in our junior nitro cars? If, and I repeat if, Jack had been hurt, first and foremost we would be concerned for his well being and his family. Next, I would be concerned for his team and their families. When the big team is parked, lots of folks don’t get paid.

What about all the planned promotions? Pre-paid airfare, hotels etc. Some will say, "just get a substitute driver while he recuperates," as we've seen happen in the past. Now, it seems you only get to drive if you bring the sponsor dollars. How would that work now?

I go back and forth on the “hero” driver thing. When Gordie Bonin bounced Jeff Gaynor's first car off of the wall when it was still in show quality mode, we all just kind of shrugged our shoulders and said, “That’s racing!” When Ron Capps came to drive Jeff Gaynor's car, he made it worthwhile, to those of us on the team and by going out of his way to promote the events where he was to drive. When Ron had his incident a mere four days before the finals, when he still had a shot at the title, I thought for sure Don Schumacher would limit his driver's “extracurricular” activities. Now, Jack just had his "uh-oh." Could we see stipulations in their contracts that limit their participation? Driving on the freeway is dangerous. Do they limit that?

I had a friend tell me of some NASCAR guy who lost his ride because he got hurt racing karts on an off weekend. Is that true? Like I said, I go back and forth on this.

I need to add that Del Worsham gets a free pass on all of this. He built a car to come play with us. I also like the YouTube video of Del and myself going at it at Fontana. I like it even more because I got there first. Check it out here:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GR6wJrMQoV8.

Some of you will say I’m just down on “hero” drivers coming and stealing my thunder. Sometimes, you’re right. I occasionally get a ’tude that these guys get paid to drive race cars and I have to pay to drive race cars. Can’t they go to the beach on their days off?

After all that I’m supposed to come up with this months Jefty-ism? Wasn’t that last bit bitchy enough?
