The run? No bueno. It left and went left. At about half-track it decided to go right. HARD. So, back to the drawing board. Back at the drawing board we found a broken wheelie bar and some long push rods that wanted to be short. After bending Amos’s ear, we decided to put the thing away with no holes in it. So, for the first time in a long time we put the car away without crap draggin’ on the ground. Fun? Damn it? Sort of.
That night we BBQ’d and sat on the tailgate of the trailer and watched the orchestrated mayhem in the Plueger pit right across from us. A sea of bodies attended to the two cars. They lacked nothing. "That was how it needed to be done," I said to the guys. "They do it right. THAT is how you race." While we drank our adult beverages picked from the fine aisle at Albertson's, we couldn’t help but feel the deal has passed us by.
Big congrats to all who came to the March Meet. There is nothing like it. It’s a happening. We’ll be back. Just not sure at what level.
Don’t worry, gang, we’re not hanging it up. Just re-evaluating our place in this thing. Remember, fun, damn it!
Couple of closing things here. My friend Jon Lundberg sent me a note about a really cool project he is helping out on:
“Jeff, A friend of mine in Tucson is the new owner of the Arfons brothers Green Monster #5. We need to collect every picture of the car available to re create the cowl, mount the correct tail and return the car to its original glory.
“It originally ran by Ranger power and was upgraded to a Allison V12. We need information about this car regarding when it ran and wish to contact any surviving crew members. They hope to debut the car at the CHRR in the Cacklefest…”
Lets try and help this project along. Jon is the voice of drag racing. For us younger tykes, he was immortalized on Cole Coonce’s Big Sounds Of the Drags CD with the immortal tag… “The cackle begins…again”.
Any info you folks have, forward it to me and I’ll be sure Jon gets it. Thanks!
Now, this months Jefty-ism. You thought I forgot didn’t you? Why would I forget to complain?
This time, it's about the sound deal at Fontana. Auto Club Dragway at Auto Club Speedway blows. They've got no balls. For three years now, we have had nitro cars on the schedule and when the date gets close the loud cars get dropped. I’m over it. I get all excited and do things like invite my kids' Cub Scout dens to come do the National Anthem and Pledge of Allegiance, and they cancel the nitro cars. Why? Because of one homeowner in the area. I just watched Pulp Fiction again after many years and I think we can deal with the hold-out. No violence. Maybe Winston Wolfe can help solve the problem.
I grew up within earshot of Lions. My father worked there. On some Saturdays, when he wasn’t at the track, we would sit in the backyard by the BBQ and listen to qualifying. It was really cool. This person needs to be
educated on how cool drag racing is.
The other side of the coin? I know a guy, who knows a guy…
