Another thing about the meeting...was it just me noticing this or did all of the dragster guys stand on one side of Steve and all of the funny car guys stand on the opposite side? I thought I heard someone say something about a rumble and the Sharks versus the Jets. Me? I was too busy standing on a gopher hill trying to look tall and get Natalie Wood's attention…
Next up was the 2nd annual Old Tucson Dragway reunion at Southwest International Raceway in lovely Tucson, Arizona. This event confused me. Not that that should be a big surprise! As I embrace middle age lots of things confuse me on a regular basis. So, this event was to run on a Friday night and Saturday during the day. Friday night got rained out. Nostalgia top fuel was supposed to be there but for some reason they couldn’t come to terms with the track and didn’t show. There was not much in the way of any race reports around so I’ll make this up as I go and use old scores…
For the funny car guys, Steve Nichols won and Mike Adams was runner up. How they were paired to determine that must have been by Ouija (pronounced weegee, stay with me) board! Gaynor, Godfrey and Capps had low e.t. again (like the March Meet) and have secured my kids' college fund after I bought stock in Alcoa aluminum earlier in the year. Thanks guys! Also at this event was the new 7.0 Pro class being promoted by Mike Cross. Mike is a long time racer of Goodguys in the A-Fuel and NE-1 class. I’m sure he’s done lots before but I don’t want to give his age away. He invited 8 cars for this shindig and all got paid (like TWICE what was guaranteed) and the next event for these guys will be at Sacto on April 20-21st. What else happened in Tucson? I don’t have a clue. It must be some big secret. Someone said on a popular message board that the spectator attendance looked a little light on Saturday. For what it’s worth, all the NIGHT races I have run at Tucson have been standing room only. If in fact the attendance was down for this event, let's hope something can be worked out to make it a night race next year.
Which brings me to the next ditty on my list - the Nostalgia Nitro Shootout being held at Auto Club Dragway in Fontana, Ca. on April 21st. This sounds like a cool event, but my only gripe is that it’s a day race. You got NE-1, A-Gas, Nostalgia Top Fuel and Nostalgia Funny Car among others but no one's talking about the other classes. I would like to, but where is the info? And it looks like a day race. No offense to the fine folks who live in Fontana. Let me give a shout out to Fontana’s finest, the Hells Angels, in fact. They just celebrated their 50th anniversary and it would cool if the red and white showed to give a little support to this event, but...it’s a day race. Call me a snob, but I want nitro at night. Sorry. Still, I wish nothing but success for this event.
