Bored?
Hey, is anyone as bored as I am? In my last column I complained about how quiet things are out there this year. I thought maybe someone would let me know what’s new and exciting with their deal. At the very least I was hoping people would tell me what new decals they decided to put on their heap to pretend like they get free stuff. Nothing. Nada.
The big show has the “silly season” so I guess we have the “silent season”...cue Simon & Garfunkle’s “Sound of Silence” now please.
I’m really only complaining because I know a lot about what’s going on behind the scenes but I can’t talk about it! It sucks. The whole "secret" thing has trickled down to our little hobby as if we could really offend any sponsor enough to pull his or her support. Am I wrong to think that the folks who typically help out the nostalgia racers do it because they love drag racing, they love the nostalgia movement, and they enjoy giving the big show the bird? Figuratively of course. Or, maybe not!
This must make me a bad journalist. Knowing things that are going on and not reporting them. I suck. But again maybe my withholding of information is just a throwback to a simpler time? Kind of what we nostalgia racers are doing with drag racing - a trip back to a simpler time. Let's discuss a few similarities, shall we?
For example, we all know the press knew that JFK was having Marilyn Monroe over for some “summit talks” and what summits they were! They kept it quiet. Just like I’m keeping
quiet that there could be two nostalgia races at Fontana Auto Club Dragway in 2007, but mum's the word with me I tell ya. Back in high school we all learned that FDR was paralyzed from the waist down, but the press never released any reports of him needing leg braces to walk in public appearances or that he was basically confined to a wheelchair. Again, I’m keeping my mouth shut about a two-car Nostalgia Funny Car team that will bring one of the greats from the 1970’s back out to play. And this team has nothing to do with Steve Pluegar. See? I can keep my mouth shut. I can also say not one word about the three irons a certain hack journo has sitting in the fire regarding rides in the all too-often-written-about Nostalgia Funny Car class. Look away folks, nothing to see here.
It seems the Cone of Silence has been lifted slightly from the e-mail I received from an anonymous bean spiller regarding the AA/FD Inc. schedule for 2007. ‘Bout time. Fifteen dates and of note should be the “Special Event” the weekend of April 21-22. If you do some diggin' on the Internet you can find out where it's going to be. Thank Lemmy it’s not the “Last Drag Race!” Let's have a look at the dates:
Febuary 9-10: Pomona, Calif., NHRA Winternationals, 4-car exhibition
March 9-11: Bakersfield March Meet, 16-car open show
March 23-24: Tucson, 8-car show
April 21-22: special event
April 27: Seattle, Wash., 8-car show Chicago style
