Once again it seems too short a time since we went flying around Las Vegas Motor Speedway last January as part of Lenny Rickards’ group. The drive around the Speedway was interesting and benefitted the ‘Speedway Children’s Charities!
After four years of presenting ‘Then & Now’ for your enjoyment, it is time to thank several racers who have been a large part of this column.
Sam’s Town, Billy Bob’s Steak House, Sept. 15, 2012: This group of well wishers on my Birthday last year, have all contributed to the success of ‘Then & Now”! l/r: Mark Yuill, half of the famous Yuill Brothers Pro Stock team, and owner of Freedom Cycles in both Las Vegas & Reno; Ron Ogilvie, my long time crew chief from the Bill Thomas Super Stock days of the ‘60s to my efforts with Larry Johnson in the ‘70s; yours truly; Mel Larson, one of auto racing’s brilliant minds who is a major influence on me for many years; his wife, Marilyn; and my wife and editor, Sherry. Five years ago, Ron asked me, “Didn’t you study writing in college?” “Why don’t you send something to DRO and see what happens.”
Major support has come from a Las Vegas resident that I did not really know until this column appeared in Jan. of 2010--Lenny Rickards! Lenny knew me from being a boy who attended races in Kahoka, Mo. with his father. We met, and the rest is just a great story. Lenny knows everyone in the Classic show car arena here in Las Vegas. He and his group of Pontiac lovers have several really nice restored cars. The connection doesn’t end there, as Len & Sandy’s daughter Hannah is the number 1 girl Friday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
