Just wondering while staying up late to watch the NHRA Big Show from Charlotte on ESPN2

Just Wondering… Did I just miss it? Wouldn’t you think that the ESPN Sports Center show could have found 60 seconds out of the hour broadcast Saturday to make mention of Matt Hagan’s historic 3.995 barrier-busting pass for nitro floppers at Bruton Smith’s Speed Palace at Charlotte? If it was mentioned, I missed it.

Just Wondering… Doesn’t the NHRA spend $8-10M a year with ESPN to broadcast their national events and doesn’t ESPN sell ads on every one of those broadcasts for additional revenue? You’d think those guys would throw us a “bone” just once in a while and give NHRA drag racing a little air time other than when someone blows up, crashes, or gets killed, wouldn’t you?

Just Wondering… Are the IHRA races and their “champions” blurring the lines between real racing and exhibition racing?

Just Wondering… Can we assume that the ESPN program producer of the Charlotte race believed that the most exiting thing about the first race of the Countdown was the “smack talk” between a few of the Pro Stock Motorcycle teams? As they always seem to do, the producers of the show found one thing of interest and basically beat that subject to death. Evidently they felt the Countdown itself was a lot less interesting than listening to some posturing and meaningless talk between riders and tuners of Pro Stock Bikes. After all, unlike NASCAR, these guys aren’t going to wreck each other on the track or at the next race. Two words for ESPN guys regarding this mildly interesting story: Wretched Excess! When CK punches out GL then you have a story worth repeating.

Just Wondering… Based on the speed and subsequent ET records set at zMAX Dragway this past weekend, I think it’s safe to say that the nitro tuners have made the rev-limiter that is supposed to slow down those cars completely and totally ineffective.

Just Wondering… If the press release regarding the lease of Gateway International Raceway for one year by the enigmatic Curtis Francois was right and he leased the track for one year beginning in September as the press release stated, does that means he would have to sign another lease to hold the NHRA national event in October of 2012?  I wouldn’t book hotel reservations for that race just yet.

Just Wondering… Has the NMRA/NMCA doorslammer circuit quietly become easily the second largest sanctioning body in drag racing? The answer is yes, considering the number of events that VP of the racing arm Charlie Harmon supervises. Between their Ford-centric and other events they may end up with more races at premier tracks than the National Hot Rod Association.

DRAG RACING Online will be published on the 8th of each month and will be updated throughout the month.

DRAG RACING Online owes allegiance to no sanctioning body and will call 'em as we see 'em. We strive for truth, integrity, irreverence and the betterment of drag racing.
