Just Wondering While Awaiting the Dog Days of Summer

Just Wondering… Should any of us be surprised when dollars trump ethics in racing?  The NHRA trumpeted in a recent press release that NHRA Worldwide is sanctioning drag racing in the Arabian Peninsula country of Bahrain, a country new to the sport of drag racing where freedom of the press and speech, and fair play doesn’t always seem to be the rule. I guess that like the F-1 race series, the Olympics, and World Cup Soccer, the first priority is money then morality.

Just Wondering… Was I the only one that noticed the number of empty seats at Englishtown last weekend? I can’t ever remember that many empty seats for an E-town national event when the weather was good. A call to E-town expert Bobby Doerrer confirms my observation. If the attendance is down, it’s all about the Benjamins, boys!

Just Wondering… Do you suppose that the E-town NHRA race date will be moved back to its traditional date on a weekend before or after July 4th?

Just Wondering… In these hard economic times would bracket racers swap a little track prep for more prize money? One quarter-mile track owner told me he spends about $2500 a week on track prep. He wondered if putting more money into the payouts and spending less on track prep would result in more bracket racers at his track. If the track is the same for everyone and it is  bracket racing, what’s the problem with slightly higher ET’s?

Just Wondering… How the NHRA brass feel about some of their bigger track owner/operators getting into the sanctioning body business?  Because that is exactly what track operators at Houston, Dallas, Denver, Englishtown and others have done by buying not only the Super Chevy Show series but resurrecting the Fun Ford Weekend series.  Both of those series have their own rulebooks and classes. Doesn’t that mean the tracks that have those series are in direct competition with the NHRA?

Just Wondering… Did you know that, according to DRO sources, the NHRA and ESPN have a contract to broadcast NHRA national event races through the 2016 season?  I won’t be criticizing the ESPN2 broadcast any longer because evidently it will be at least five more years before there can be any change -- so why waste the time or editorial space?

Just Wondering… Why the NHRA isn’t taking more advantage of the fact that one of the biggest draws in the history of the sport, Don Garlits, is racing at selected NHRA national events? I don’t care what he is driving people will buy tickets to see him race.

Just Wondering… Why the NHRA or Mopar hasn’t done an ad with Garlits promoting his return to drag racing in a door car? I think they are passing up a pretty good story line.
