Usually the Burkster can be relied upon for a column with the occasional snarky comment or two, but in keeping with the spirit of the Thanksgiving season I decided to wite a column enumerating the things I’m grateful for this time of the year
I’m grateful… For nitromethane and the smell of racing gas in the morning (but mostly for nitromethane).
I’m grateful… For those racers who manage to field a professional category race car with funds and parts they’ve had to beg, borrow, or steal. As long as there are some of those team owners and racers (and you know who you are) I have hope for the sport.
I’m grateful… To the manufacturers and advertising men and women who believe in and spend their advertising dollars to support DRO, Mopar Max and Max Chevy and never try to influence the editorial content despite the heat they sometimes get when the mags stray from the politically correct path.
I’m grateful… For the freelance writers and photographers whose names you see in the magazine. They work for little pay and put up with my sometimes hard-to-live-with demands for their very best effort each and every time. I’m especially grateful that they share my passion for perfection.
I’m grateful… For that rare racer or team owner that takes the time to tell me or one of the writers or photographers representing the mags that they appreciate the coverage of a race or the feature on them, their race car or a product. You cannot know how much a simple thank you from a racer or team owner means to us.
I’m grateful… For the readers and racers who write letters to the editor and have the integrity and guts to sign their names.
I’m grateful… For auto-focus and auto-exposure digital 35mm cameras. Technology has made me a much better photographer.
I’m grateful… For Conrad Kalitta. The man spends millions and millions of dollars in nitro racing, mostly without real high-dollar sponsorship. I know he goes out of his way to help many nitro racers stay racing yet he never seeks any kind of spotlight or attention. He just does what he can to help keep underfunded nitro racers racing. He is a true drag racing philanthropist.
I’m grateful… That there are still promoters like George Howard, Steve Earwood, Scott Gardner, Carl Weisinger and Ron Leek (just to name a few), who were hardcore racers before they were promoters and still often make decisions based upon what they’ve learned as racers and not just as a promoter.
I’m grateful… That I’ve gotten to know IHRA prez Aaron Polburn. He has a severely debilitating disease yet when I call and talk with him he neither asks for nor expects any sympathy. Instead he acts as if nothing is wrong. I don’t always agree with the way he does business but I cannot argue with his determination and humor.
