More wondering

Just Wondering … If the NHRA is truly expanding the brand globally, why wouldn’t they make sure that during the 2-3 hour broadcast of the NHRA race from Brainerd this past weekend they might direct the ESPN announcers to acknowledge the 25th annual FIA-sanctioned drag race in Hockenheim, Germany, that same weekend? You would think the fact that one of their own superstars, Melanie Troxel driving a car owned by one of NHRA’s major backers, Roger Burgess, set a new record for FIA Pro Mod while competing at the event would be worth a mention? C’mon, NHRA PR guys, get a clue.

Just Wondering … As heartwarming as privateer Bob Bode’s win in nitro Funny Car at Brainerd last weekend was, I wonder how long it will be before we see that happen again? Usually the big bucks win.

Just Wondering … Same subject: Would Jim Head be the last true privateer prior to Bode to win an NHRA Wally in Top Fuel or Funny Car?

Just Wondering … Why is the Alan Johnson Al-Anabi Top Fuel car so dominant and their nitro Funny Car so not dominant?  Could it be that Top Fuel and Funny Cars really are completely different to race and tune? And if true what does that say for the tuning ability of Lee Beard who has tuned winning, dominant cars in both classes?

Just Wondering … Why don’t Pro Stock Bike riders have to wear some kind HANS device? Am I the only one who wonders why NHRA continues to make and enforce more and more draconian measures to make drag racing  safer yet allows drivers of two-wheel race vehicles that make the quarter mile  in over 200mph, in less than seven-seconds to race with nothing but a helmet and leathers. The answer is; Drag Racing is inherently dangerous and there are limits to how much that reasonably can be done!

Just Wondering … Is the NHRA in better financial shape today than when it was doing so poorly financially in 2009 that president Tom Compton had to institute a wage reduction (which has since been suspended for most NHRA employees) across the board? Could we assume the sanctioning body lost money that year? My sources say absolutely! With all of the rainouts and smaller crowds at many races in 2010, can we expect the NHRA is probably going to lose money again this year? The NHRA’s 2009 tax returns will be available in a couple months.

Just Wondering … What the legendary and now 70-year-old performer  “Bennie the Bomb,” whom I’m told travels the country with the dynamite he uses to “blow himself up with” in the trunk of his car, says to a traffic cop if he gets pulled over on the freeway and they see the dynamite? I’ll bet that traffic stop would be entertaining.

DRAG RACING Online will be published on the 8th of each month and will be updated throughout the month.
