Racers take top honors at second zMax Mayhem

Saturday’s round two of the NOS Energy Mayhem @ the MAX Series presented by Kooks Custom Headers, JE Pistons and Roush Yates Performance Parts produced six new winners and one repeat winner at zMAX Dragway. The seven classes to compete included Super Pro, Pro Street, Top Eliminator, Sportsman, Motorcycle and two divisions of Junior Dragster.

Second-generation drag racer Doug Foley Jr., of Statesville, N.C., picked up the victory in the Super Pro class with an elapsed time of 8.62 seconds at 150.98 mph in his dragster. Paul Weeks, of Concord, won the Pro Street class with a run of 11.11 seconds at 116.93 mph in his 1979 Chevrolet Camaro. Weeks won the Sportsman class in round one. Scottie Keller, of Mooresville, N.C., was once again the fastest on two wheels, grabbing his second consecutive victory on his 1990 Kawasaki motorcycle with a run of 9.41 seconds at 140.66 mph.

Tyler Mayhew, of Waxhaw, N.C., claimed the Sportsman class with a 7.38 second run at 92.10 mph in his Chevrolet Nova.

Azarias Gouin, of Pawleys Island, S.C., picked up the win in Junior Dragster A, courtesy of a red light by his final round competitor. Gouin’s time was 8.96 seconds at 74.68 mph. Noah Strickland, of Concord, cruised to the victory in Junior Dragster B with a time of 7.91 seconds at 83.05 mph.

Snowmobile racer dies in finish-line accident

Dan Cerio, of Manlius, NY, was fatally injured during eliminations after he hit the guard wall at the completion of his run Saturday evening, May 5, at US 131 Motorsports Park in Martin, Mich. Cerio, 22, experienced a mechanical malfunction at the finish line, and was thrown from his snowmobile.

He was a student of The Hot Rod Institute in Rapid City, SD.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, May 10, 10 a.m. at St. Ann's Church, Manlius, NY, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Entombment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at St. Ann's Church, 104 Academy St., Manlius, NY 13104.
