ProMod Challenge invitees named for final ’08 event
The JEGS ProMod Challenge folks have released the official list of invitees for the final event of their 10-race schedule at Las Vegas Oct. 31-Nov.2.
Headlined by JEGS ProMod Challenge championship contenders Josh Hernandez, Tony Pontieri, Jay Payne, Danny Rowe, Steve Matusek (shown) Kirk Kuhns, and Joe Baker, the list of racers that will vie for the last trophy of the year also includes IHRA regulars Kenny Lang, Mike Castellana, Tommy D'Aprile, and Mike Janis.
As usual, the regulars from the JEGS ProMod Challenge will be looking to protect their turf. Former series winners Troy Coughlin, Rick Stivers, Harold Laird, and Von Smith will be joined by hopefuls Roger Burgess, Ray Commisso, Rick DiStefano, Tommy Gray, Mike Knowles, Taylor Lastor, Mike Moran, Scott Ray, and Tim Tindle.
One new first time NHRA Pro Mod racer was invited. NHRA Comp Eliminator killer qualifier Steve Matusek and his twin-turbocharged 330 cubic inch Mustang were extended an invitation. Matusek and his Aeromotive Fuel System back ’07 Mustand have qualified #1 in NHRA Comp Eliminator action five times so far this year.

Ripes redux
Yesterday we noted that Marv Ripes will be both Grand Marshall and Honorary Starter for the NHRA Jegs Pacific SPORTSnationals this weekend at Auto Club Dragway at Fontana, Calif., which prompted old friend Randy Fish, editor of Drag Racer Magazine, to send us this photo.
Marv Ripes (center) visited with Comp Eliminator standouts Kevin Self (left) and his dad Glen recently. Two weeks ago, Kevin qualified number one in Dallas with the family’s F/EA, and posted a quarter-finals finish. He also scored a runner-up last weekend in Memphis.
