Could Flint dragstrip be near ‘Chevy in the Hole’?

A story in the Flint (Mich.) Journal reports that a dragstrip could be built using a little-used street near the unused “Chevy in the Hole” plant in that city. The story reports that Bluff Street – which has no buildings and is bounded by mostly abandoned parking lots -- has recently been paved and they are installing guard rails.

Sounds like a dragstrip to the Agent. The mayor of Flint, Don Williamson, is making the effort in reaction to the burgeoning street racing in Flint. Williamson is a former manager and owner of a dragstrip in Brainard, MI.

A big tip of the Agent’s fedora to Mr. Williamson. [9/5/2008]

More Silly Season rumors

The latest RUMORS about the new Alan Johnson team has Gary Scelzi going  back to drive a dragster for his old crew chief, but other reports have Larry Dixon in that seat -- which might have some credence if the other rumor that Prudhomme’s sponsorship with U.S. Smokeless Tobacco expires this year and may not be renewed. It’ll all get sorted out eventually. [9/5/2008]

Cannon calls it quits

After a continued unsuccessful sponsor search, Scotty Cannon has decided to sell or lease his entire operation effective immediately.  This operation includes a new first class motor home and trailer, turn key Pro Modified 1968 Firebird that won the 2007 IHRA World Championship, as well as several motors and spare parts.

:We have put the word out that we are in search of a sponsor and have had no results in getting anything going,” Scotty said. “The economy has taken its toll on our efforts and I just cannot continue to run the car without a major sponsor. If it had not been for Richard and Thomas Patterson we would not have been able to compete at all this season.”

The team will compete at this weekend’s IHRA North American Nationals at New England Dragway in Epping, NH.

“I certainly would like to end this season on a high note and do the best I can this weekend. My teammate Thomas Patterson and I would like to end up in the finals,” said current World Champ Scott Cannon Jr.  (Brad Turk photo) [9/5/2008]
