BRUTON ADDS KENTUCKY SPEEDWAY TO HIS STABLE; WHEELER LEAVES

News out of the Carolina’s yesterday all revolved around mega-promoter and track owner O. Bruton Smith. One news release confirmed that Mr. Smith has signed an agreement to purchase Kentucky Speedway, a NASCAR size oval track.

News also made the wires that fabled Charlotte (Lowes) Motor Speedway’s Humpy Wheeler was retiring. Rumor has it that Mr. Wheeler wasn’t thrilled with the prospect of a drag strip on the same grounds as the legendary Charlotte oval track and he and Mr. Smith didn’t agree, so Mr. Wheeler “retired.” It’s just a rumor but H. Wheeler has made it plain in the past that he wasn’t interested in promoting a drag strip.

On that same subject, the Agent wonders if there is enough flat ground around Kentucky Speedway’s 1.5 mile oval for a dragstrip. Can you say ADRL? [5/22/2008]

ADDITIONAL SPONSORS FOR LEE AT MILAN

Nitro Funny Car Driver Cory Lee heads back to Detroit’s Milan Dragway May 23-25 for IHRA’s Motor City Nationals behind the wheel of Jeff and Bonnie McGaffic’s nitro-powered Monte Carlo Funny Car with MetalWood-bat and newly signed sponsorship from Nitroactive.net and Church – Cars, Not Culture. While Nitroactive.net specializes in vintage and nostalgia drag racing memorabilia; Church – Cars, Not Culture (www.carsnotculture.com) produces original custom car culture t-shirts, books, and related art.

“The last time I was behind the wheel of a funny car at the fabled Milan Dragway was during a match race years ago against Del Worsham and the late Al Hofmann. Needless to say, I’m feeling a little nostalgic, but that was then, and this is now. After a final round appearance at the 2007 IHRA World Finals and a quarter-final finish at the 2008 Spring Nationals, I seriously need to take care of some unfinished business.” [5/22/2008]
