DRAGSTOCK IV SETS UP FOR ADRL FINAL

A likely showdown between defending American Drag Racing League champion Bubba Stanton of Potts Camp, Miss. (shown), NHRA Pro Modified champion-to-be Joshua Hernandez of Conroe, Texas, and ADRL national record holder Jason Scruggs of Saltillo, Miss., looms large this week as the ADRL returns to Steve Earwood’s Rockingham Dragway for Dragstock IV on Sept. 14-15.

While Stanton is the current ADRL points leader in the featured Pro Extreme class, Hernandez may be the hottest Pro Modified driver on the planet. Wheeling the  “Dr. Moon’s Rage” Chevrolet for Howard Moon, the Texas driver has won five of seven races this season in the NHRA Pro Mod Series and was runner-up in a sixth, all but locking up the AMS Championship. He also has enjoyed previous success at The Rock where he was the Pro Modified Champion at the IHRA Spring Nationals in 2006.

Dragstock IV is the last of eight races in which drivers can earn points that will determine who will compete for Flowmaster ADRL championships in the Battle of the Belts. The top eight drivers after Saturday’s eliminations will compete Oct. 12 in a showdown event at Ennis, Tex., that will determine champions in Pro Extreme, Pro Nitrous, Pro Extreme Motorcycle and Extreme 10.5 classes.  (Ian Tocher photo) [9/10/2007]

CONRAD SUFFERS FATAL HEART ATTACK

Ed Conrad, 62, a resident of Gardena, Calif. who competed in drag racing competition at Irwindale Speedway’s drag strip died Thursday night, Sept. 6. Conrad was preparing to compete in the Speedway’s drag strip test and tune session and went into apparent cardiac arrest. Reportedly, the car ran down the length of the track along the guardrail, and came to rest past the finish line, the throttle still open and tires spinning. Conrad was removed from the car and taken to Methodist Hospital in Arcadia were he was pronounced dead.

“We are obviously shocked and saddened by Ed Conrad’s death,” said Bob DeFazio, General Manager of Irwindale Speedway. “Ed was a long-time participant of our drag racing program and was well known and admired by the other competitors. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.”

Funeral arrangements are pending.  (Mike Morgan photo) [9/10/2007]

SHOOTOUTS APLENTY AT NMCA ATLANTA RACE

After rain ruined what shaped up to be a spectacular race at Milan, Michigan, last month, racers of the Edelbrock Drag Racing Series turn their attention to the 6th annual Nitto Tire NMCA Muscle Car Nationals at Atlanta Dragway Sept. 14-16. With only two races left in the 2007 season, this is the race where many championships are decided, and where racers vying for bragging rights, begin to emerge.

Not only are championships on the line at this race, but also individual class shootouts will be contested as well. Class shootouts to be contested during Saturday’s qualifying include the Nitto Tire Super Street 10.5W Shootout where racers will be vying for $4,500 in cash, with the winner receiving $2,500 bonus bucks. Also scheduled for the event is the Nitto Street Race Shootout where more than $3,000 will be awarded to the contestants. There are two more shootouts, which due to the rain in Michigan, will also be finished.

There are four racers remaining in the Carnivore Shootout for Nostalgia Pro Street racers, and Vinny Budano and George Landis (shown) have yet to settle the final in the Pro Street Shootout.  (Bret Kepner photo) [9/10/2007]
