GATEWAY TO HOST TRAVELING PROS ON WEDNESDAY

Gateway International Raceway will add the Jerry Haas Factory Hot Rod Showdown to its regular Wednesday night program on June 6. Haas, a Pro Stock racer and legendary chassis builder, is from the St. Louis area. Many NHRA and IHRA regulars are expected to compete as they make a stop at the track just across the Mississippi from St. Louis on their way from Topeka to Joliet. Pro Stocks, Pro Mods, Pro Stock Motorcycles and Doc’s Harley Davidson Quick Street Bikes will run. [6/1/2007]

WANNA TRADE?

The Agent was amused to read some comments in the New York Times by Jerry Garrett about the ESPN broadcasting team for the Indy 500. Mr. Garrett was bemoaning lead announcer Marty Reid’s lack of knowledge of the IndyCar series’ cars and drivers. “Whatever happened to the old pro Paul Page?” Garrett asked.[6/1/2007]

RALLY REMINDER

Just a reminder for LA area racers that there will be a "Save LACR Rally" in front of Los Angeles County Raceway tonight (June 1). The rally will be held at 6 p.m. at the entrance on Avenue T. For more information contact Jeff Hillinger of the Save LACR Committee at 661-944-2299.

The Agent hopes the rally-ers will not be, as Bernie Partridge used to say, beating their head against a dead horse. But wait, there might be hope. . .how many miles is it from LACR in Palmdale to Banning, CA?[6/1/2007]

FOR THE RECORD

The jury trial for Julie Russell’s lawsuit against Goodyear and the NHRA is set to begin on Monday, June 11. Her husband, Darrell Russell, was killed in an on-track accident on June 27, 2004.

The NHRA has never released any information on their investigation of the accident, although VP Graham Light promised to do so shortly after the incident. Ms. Russell filed suit on July 7, 2005. (Ron Lewis photo)[6/1/2007]

NEW OWNERS FOR PIEDMONT

The Agent hears that North Carolina’s Piedmont Dragway has new owners, Herb “Herbie” McCandless Jr and his brother Michael McCandless, as of May 31. [6/1/2007]

A NEW DRAG RACING MAGAZINE FROM NHRA PRO RACING?

Among the many items Agent 1320 noted from the NHRA-HDP press conference was that the management team for NHRA Pro Racing didn’t buy National Dragster as part of the pro “assets” they acquired. They did get NHRA.com however and stated that they plan a “re-launch” of that web site as well as developing new “professional drag racing publications.”

Don’t be surprised if the company doesn’t start a slick magazine for the newsstand devoted exclusively to NHRA Pro Racing. The Agent remembers when former VP of NHRA publications Neil Britt wanted to do the same thing several years ago, which may have contributed to his getting forced out of the NHRA for his efforts.
