SHAV GLICK PASSES AWAY
Noted motorsports journalist for the L.A. Times, Shav Glick, succumbed to cancer on Oct. 20, after a lengthy battle. He was 87. The media center at the Auto Club Raceway at Pomona was named is his honor.
The last article he wrote for the newspaper was an obituary three weeks ago for NHRA founder Wally Parks. It is, indeed, the end of an era. (photo courtesy Los Angeles Times) [10/23/2007]
TCI FOOTBRAKE CLASSIC IS OH, KAY!

Former B&M World Champion Doyle Kay took a world-class group of footbrakers to school at Montgomery Motorsports Park, winning two of the three events in the Second Annual TCI Footbrake Classic Oct. 19-21 including the Classic itself.
Kay, from Ashville, AL, rolled through the field on Friday, meeting Dallas, GA, ace Charlie Hardie in the finals. Kay was emphatic with an .023 light and a 6.515 on his 6.48 dial at 99.03 miles an hour in the finals. Hardie lost a bunch on the tree and ended up with a breakout 6.676 on his 6.69 dial at 101.87 miles per hour. Jamie Walker of Jonesboro, GA, was the lone semi-finalist.
On Saturday, the racing got tougher as the winner's checks went higher. But at the end of the day, Kay was one of only two left standing, as he met Allen Reno of Gardendale, AL, in the finals. Reno had a slight (.020 to .029) starting line advantage, but couldn't make it work as he ran a 7.989 at 86.91 mph on his 7.87 dial. Kay ran a workmanlike 6.540 on a 6.47 dial at 93.50 miles per hour. Tracy Crutcher of Pleasant View, TN, and Bob Tatum of Salem, VA, were the semi-finalists.

Sunday's 10-grander had different characters in the finals as Bill Crutcher from Greenbriar, TN, lined up against Mobile, AL, racer John Kitsos (shown), who just arrived at the event Sunday morning. Kitsos scored a .013 light and a dead-on 6.864 on his 6.86 dial at 98.19 miles per hour. Crutcher had a .034 light and a 7.873 on a 7.87 dial at 86.91 mph but couldn't overcome Kitsos's starting line advantage, giving Kitsos an .0208 margin of victory.
