SPORT COMPACT RECORDS FALL

National records were broken in two classes, Hot Rod and Modified, over the weekend at the NHRA Sport Compact Nationals at Virginia Motorsports Park.

Defending Hot Rod world champion Ron Lummus drove his ECOtec-powered Pontiac to his first victory of the year and set both ends of the national record in the process to 8.03 seconds at 179.78 mph. In the final, Lummus was handed the win when his opponent, Stephane Beauregard, left before Lummus had even staged.

Paul Efantis won the Modified class and set both ends of the national record driving his Toyota Solara to a 7.60-second elapsed time at 180.74 mph. Other event winners were Matt Scranton in Pro RWD, Ed Bergenholtz in Pro FWD, and Saul Salceda won Honda Tuning All Motor.

Thanks to our friends at Summit’s Drag Race Central we also checked on the car count, so here’s the tally. Pro FWD-6 entries; Pro RWD-5 entries; Modified-7 entries; Hot Rod-6 entries; All Motor-8 entries; Street Stock-7 entries; Sport FWD-7 entries and Quick 16 attracted a mere 2 racecars. Television coverage of the Virginia NHRA Sport Compact Nationals can be seen on ESPN2 on May 7.  [4-24-2006]
